Review - Samsung Galaxy Tab 2

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is a refreshed version in the Galaxy series of premium tablet PCs. This tablet PC is the South Korean manufacturer’s attempt to capture market-share against the Apple iPad. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is a reasonably priced tablet PC. It is not as expensive as the iPad or inexpensive as the Funbook.
The Galaxy Tab 2 is value for money. It has plenty of features, advanced specifications, and good design aesthetics. Performance-wise it fares better than two of its nearest competitors, namely the Xoom and Tablet S.

First Impressions

The design of the Galaxy Tab 2 is contemporary. The 7” display does not defy your imagination. But it looks just fine. The rear of the tab is layered with grey plastic matte. This layering renders sophistication to the otherwise elegant tablet PC.
Slim measurements characterize this device. The 10.5mm thin sleek design weighs just less than 350 grams. Even though the tablet PC has large dimensions, it is a joy to hold. Being lightweight and slim, you can hold the device without any discomfort.

What’s great?
When you look at the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, you can’t help but admiring at the gunmetal grey plastic chassis. The design aesthetics takes off with the wide-ribbon black bezel that runs on the perimeter of the device.

Although the tablet is designed in many ways like its predecessors, there are subtle differences. You may have seen the design on this tablet on many tablet PCs. But that’s what this tablet is about. It does not strive to be different without a reason to be different.

The screen resolution of the Galaxy Tab 2 is noteworthy. At 1024x600 pixels resolution, you have a vivid and sharp electronic canvas in your hands. A pixels-per-inch of 170 is above average. Considering the price point, this is a decent specification.

You can choose the device based on internal storage. The device comes in three variants of internal storage. You can choose between 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB. You can expand the internal memory in the device. For instance, the 16GB device has an expandable memory slot of 32GB.

Being the cheapest tablet PC of Samsung, the Tab 2 delivers up to expectation when it comes to user experience. Meaning, the performance of the tablet is value for money. Nothing more and nothing less. Just perfect.

Powered by a dual core 1GHz processor, the tablet does pack in a punch. System calls have little or no latency. You experience the speed and agility of a smartphone-cum-laptop, which is the core essence of a tablet PC.

The dual core processor is enough to download and upload content. Be it games, videos, movies, and music, you can use all these types of multimedia files without a glitch. The UI of Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is based on the proprietary TouchWiz User Interface. This UI has received a lot of positive feedback. Widgets form the basis of this UI interface. You access everything by way of widgets and that makes your user experience better.

The reader hub is a notable feature on this tablet. By way of the reader hub you can read information from various sources on the Internet. Newspapers are supplied by PressDisplay. You can read books and magazines too. Such material is provided by Kobo and Zinio respectively.

The music hub is another useful feature if you are a music lover. This is in addition to the direct accessibility to Google’s Play store where you get to download tons of music.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 has good connectivity options. It comes in the WiFi and 3G and only WiFi variants. If you want strong networking features, then go for the 3G variant. This variant includes HSPA support. You can connect to any 3G network and experience super-fast data access. The upload and download speeds are by theory around 21 Mbps.
Not just 3G networks, the Tab 2 has native support for 802.11 a/b/g/n networks. You can access these networks through the in-built dual band WiFi technology.

What’s not so great?
The Galaxy Tab 2 is surely not a showstopper design-wise. For a tablet of this price, you would have expected more design ingenuity. But that seems to be missing from this device. The device is sleek but slimy. You may accidentally drop the tablet. The rear of the tablet does not have a gripping surface. In comparison, a tablet such as the Google Nexus 7 scores high when it comes to tablet-handling hardware design.

Samsung is known to be a master in manufacturing display panels. Surprisingly, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 does not have Samsung’s latest and great display screen. When in comparison to the Tab 7.7, the Galaxy Tab 2 uses the PLS LCD screen. The main reason for this could be to keep the price point of the tablet from shooting up.

The Galaxy Tab 2 does have a decent screen with decent resolution. But 170 pixels-per-inch is not enough. In comparison, the Nexus 7 has a higher specification in this regard. At 216 ppi, the Nexus 7 outshines the Galaxy Tab 2 in this regard.
The TouchWiz UI is based on icons. The icons are resource hogging. In no time will your battery start flickering for more charge. Therefore, you are constrained to use the UI and the device conservatively. This mode of operation is contradictory. A tablet is supposed to liberate you into a world of virtual entertainment, information, and business without hindrances.

Competitors

Samsung is surely turning the heat on the competition. Being the most inexpensive tablet from Samsung, more is expected to come in the future. The closest competitor to this tablet is Amazon Kindle Fire. The Kindle Fire is not a full-fledged tablet though, although it does have some notable features.

Another competitor is the Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet. But the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is better than the Nook in all regards. Being from a premium device manufacturer, the Galaxy Tab 2 is more of a household name than the Nook.

Bottomline
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 does not promise much, and does not deliver much. It only provides that much what you pay for. If you are looking for a smart tablet PC with good connectivity and a handful of useful features, then this is the one.
Being an Android device, this could seem another entrant in the growing array of Android tablet PCs. Therefore, you have to weigh your options carefully before buying this device.

There is no single reason to choose this tablet over the other tablet PCs in the market. That could be a problem for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. It is not radically different from its predecessors. It does not boast of exceptionally different features from its competitors. Therefore, you don’t have a reason to buy this tablet or not buy this tablet.
So the real danger is that the Tab 2 could be forgotten in a hurry. You buy this tablet for its TouchWiz user interface, Android operating system, and good network connectivity options.

Price and availability

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 costs Rs. 19500. This price is dependent on various factors. Some retail outlets may sell it at a cheaper rate. Online stores sell at discount prices. You can buy this tablet PC from popular online stores such as Quikr and HomeShop18.
