Sony Xperia P is a midlevel smartphone aimed at the younger customers. Like other midlevel smartphones in the Xperia series like the Xperia Neo L, the Xperia P has good design and build-quality. This midlevel smartphone is mainly targeted at other midrange smart phone series like the Galaxy series and the Desire series from Samsung and HTC. Some of its specifications like the WhiteMagic technology, thin transparent notification bar and the Mobile Bravia Engine make the phone to stand out in the overcrowded midrange smart phone segment.
The Xperia P features the same design that is seen on the Xperia series of phones. It has a straight appearance and sharp edges which give it a very sophisticated look. The weight of the phone is equally distributed and it is easy to hold the phone in your palm. The front of the phone has a glossy finish while the rear is clean with just the camera lens and the Sony logo. The screen of the phone is resistant to any scratches and big shocks. The 4 inch TFT capacitive display of the phone is bright even in broad sunlight. The screen supports multiple viewing angles and colours ooze out of the screen while watching videos and images.
The bigger 4 inch display has a resolution of 960 x 540 Pixels and can support 16 M colours. The display runs on Sony’s Mobile BRAVIA engine which is borrowed from its televisions. Sony has embedded the display with its WhiteMagic technology which makes watching the content on the screen good even in afternoon sunlight. WhiteMagic technology increases the brightness of the display when there is more exposure to light and automatically reduces it later to conserve the battery. Sony calls WhiteMagic its answer to Apple’s Retina display, but you better don’t expect the same experience here. Unlike other larger phones in the Xperia family like the Xperia S, the Xperia P has a unibody construction with a matte rear finish. A unique transparent white strip below the phone’s display sports three capacitive buttons for back, home and menu. The placing of buttons right on the transparent strip is a deviation from the other phones in the Xperia series where they were placed above the strip. And this eye catching change no doubt brings lot of elegance to the Xperia P.
The phone gives a smooth performance across apps, multimedia, and 3D games mostly owing to the 1 GHz dual core processor. The dual core processor is complemented by a full GB of RAM making the phone to function without any friction while multitasking. Even though the phone comes with Android 2.3 out of the box, users can upgrade the OS to the Android 4.0 ICS on their own. This makes the phone compatible with most of the latest apps. Xperia P has an 8 megapixel rear camera which can capture above average images with a resolution of 960 x 540 Pixels. The camera has tons of imaging features like geo-tagging, 3D Sweep Panorama, face detection, touch focus, image stabilization, and self timer. Another major feature of the phone’s camera is its Full HD video recording capability. This is one feature which is rarely seen in the phones priced below Rs. 25,000. Xperia P has a whopping 16 GB of internal memory for storing all your multimedia content.
Xperia P’s multimedia player can support multiple audio and video formats and can play HD and Full HD formats. The 3D Surround Sound and xLOUD Technology greatly enhance the audio quality of the phone. Carrying the legacy from the days of Sony Ericsson, Xperia P’s audio quality is almost equal to the iPod Touch. All the latest connectivity features like Bluetooth, WI-Fi (with Wi-fi Hotspot), micro USB, and HSPA are available on the phone. HDMI support makes it easy to project the multimedia content on to bigger screens like HD televisions and Laptops.
What’s not so Good?
The absence of rubberised finish on the back of the phone makes it vulnerable to slips. The clean back of the phone can also easily catch scratches when placed on hard surfaces. There may not be any upgrade to the latest Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) which is quite disappointing given that most phones in this price range like Samsung Galaxy Grand come preloaded with Android 4.1. A 1,305 mAh battery is simply sufficient for a phone with high multimedia capabilities. The battery struggles to last even for a single day with moderate usage. The phone’s memory is also nonexpendable like the Apple’s iPhone. So, you have to be contended with the onboard 16 GB memory.
Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos
Priced at Rs 19,500, Galaxy Grand is a slightly cheaper but fully packed alternative to the Xperia P. A bigger 5 inch screen makes the phone to rub its shoulders with the likes of the Xperia Z and the very latest Samsung Galaxy S4. Galaxy Grand has a slightly faster 1.2 GHz dual core processor which makes it faster than the Xperia P. The 8 GB of internal memory of the phone can be expanded by another 32 GB through a microSD card. A big draw for the Galaxy Grand is the dual SIM (GSM + GSM) support for the phone. Dual SIM support makes it a very attractive option for the affluent younger customers. The 8 MP Primary Camera can record full HD videos which can be played on the phone’s 5 inch display which again supports full HD playback. You can prefer buying this phone over the Xperia P for its bigger screen, faster processor, expandable memory and dual SIM support.
LG Optimus L9 P765
Priced at Rs 17,590, the LG Optimus L9 is a cheaper but superior alternative to the Xperia P. The sleek and slim design of the Optimus L9 will not fail to impress you as it is designed to reflect premium but minimalist preferences. Optimus L9 has a bigger 4.7 inch display which gives a superior viewing experience. Optimus L9 has the same 1 GHz dual core processor like the Xperia P. 4 GB of internal memory can be expanded up to 32 GB through a microSD card. Optimus L9 has a high capacity 2150 mAh Lithium Ion battery which gives 12 hours of talk time and a standby time of 830 hours. You can prefer the Optimus L9 over the Xperia P for its larger display, better battery, and expandable memory.
Sony’s Xperia P packs the punch with some of the best hardware specs. Features like WhiteMagic and Full HD video recording are a steal at this price and offer good value for the money you pay. The eye catching design of the phone with the transparent white strip at the bottom is some other factors which go in favor of the Xperia P. The limited 16 GB of memory of the phone need not bother many as very few people need more than that. You can buy the Xperia P for its great multimedia capabilities and design.
