Nokia N97 gives you a feeling of holding an E series phone. It is available in black and white. Not white actually but more of silver it is. It has an all metallic body. It is quite a good looking device I must say. It has a good grip. Nokia doesn’t disappoint you with its look. It has a side slider which looks good, since most other devices slide above. It has a QWERTY keypad allowing to easily connecting with people. The camera is situated at the back the volume key and the shutter are placed perfectly at the right side of the device. The USB port and the key lock button are on the left. The power key and the earphone socket are placed at the top. The call and end buttons are touch ones. The physical button is the home key here. What’s so great?
To start with, I am really quite impressed with its built. The QWERTY key pad is also good. The browser which is built in is likable too. You will be happy to know that the device screen can be tilted allowing you to type messages and watch videos without hindrance. When you want to quickly access your messages, videos or even Bluetooth connectivity you can do so by tapping on the top right corner of your phone. To quickly add a contact instead of going to the contact menu, you can just type the number on the key pad and save it instantly with a ‘save as contact’ button placed on the key pad. Nokia N97 gives a talk-time of 6 hours in 3G and 9 and a half hours in the GSM mode. It has a front camera as well. The profile menu has a feature called the timer. This allows you to change your present profile after a certain period of time. You can choose your time limit. Not to forget, it has a great multimedia. The pre-installed apps are good. These include office suits, Nokia maps and browsers. To add more it even supports Skype downloadable through Ovi store, Wi-Fi, A-GPS. A trial version of Adobe reader is also present.
What’s not so great?
Bugs, bugs and more bugs. Oh yes! The software gives you immense trouble. You might have to reboot the device after every couple days. The camera is good as well as not. Though 5 mega pixels is enough, its picture quality doesn’t impress me at all. The camera flash gets thumbs down too. Nokia N97 is slow. Yes you heard me. It is very slow and takes a lot of time to react. The touch screen can be really frustrating some times. You might even have to press a button twice to operate. The list has not ended. The keyboard of all is really annoying. Camera lacks face detection. The VGA resolution can also make you unhappy. The key lock can give you trouble sometimes when you want to unlock your device .Many a times you have to open the slider to unlock it. The CPU is slow, annoying you sometimes, especially when you are in hurry or checking something important. Lastly, the price plays a big role. It doesn’t have something so unique that you will pay a huge amount for.
The most selling brand of mobile phones is surely to have competitors. Therefore it has a slight decline in the sale of its devices. Let’s have a look at them. Sony Ericsson is all set to give Nokia a competition with its Xperia mini and Sony U. both offered at a much lower cost. You might even be surprised to know. Samsung can never stay afar with its galaxy s models. These as well come at a cheap and affordable price.
The bottom line
Nokia N97 is a complete package of features with not quite an affordable price. Though it can be understood that it’s not the brand name that always matters, the product should also live up to the expectations. The operating system is also out dated compared to the other latest versions. There is nothing extraordinary about this device which makes it recommendable or a must buy. So it’s your call. Personally I won’t recommend it. But if you are looking for an N series and you turn blind eye to all its flaws, you can get yourself a Nokia N97.
