|Nokia Lumia 820||vs||Nokia Lumia 822|
Same screen resolution
Overall Rating10 /10
Everybody doesn’t want or afford flagship phones from various mobile phones in the market. Since the launch of the Lumia series after jettisoning the Symbian OS in favor of the Windows Phone OS, Nokia has tried hard to bring a worthy second rung smart phone to the market. But the initial phones released under the Lumia brand were disappointing. But Nokia has hit it right with the launch of the Lumia 822. The phone has a unique design which deviates from the other Lumia phones and packs in all the latest desired features under its shell.
The new Lumia 822 deviates heavily from the monoblock, flat-side design of the Lumia family of phones and instead opts for a much fatter and rounded design which is mostly seen in Samsung’s Galaxy Series. The device also comes in Black and White rather than the traditional candy hues of Windows Phone devices. The 4.3 inch display of the phone looks impressive with good viewing experience.
Eventhough the deviation from the conventional design philosophy of Lumia series can be upsetting for a few, there is no doubt that the design overhaul looks refreshing. The older Lumia 820 has much cleaner looks but the Lumia has a more practical looking design with better grip in your hands. The phone looks similar to the Galaxy Nexus but a bit heavy at 141.6 grams because of its hard plastic casing. Front of the phone is totally dedicated to the phone except for the front casing camera which quietly sits above the display and the three touch sensitive keys (menu, back, and search) placed below the phone’s display. Rear of the phone has a matte finish for better grip. The phone’s rear too is left clean with just the phone’s lens and flash placed at the top.
The 4.3 inch display of the phone doesn’t look massive like the 5 inch displays seen on most recently released phones but is good enough for a mid tier smart phone. Display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 2 and has a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels (~217 ppi pixel density). The AMOLED capacitive touchscreen has support for up to 16M colors and gives good viewing quality even during broad daylight. A polarizing filter in the phone helps in cutting down the glare and gives a good viewing quality from multiple angles. The phone runs on the Windows Phone OS which itself makes it unique. Interface of the phone is beautiful as it is makes the phone’s UI more cleaner than Android as well as shows more on the home screen than the iOS.
The phone has a 1.5 GHz Krait dual-core processor which makes the phone to work with excellent speed. Nokia has included all the recent connectivity options like NFC in the phone which makes it easy for connecting with other devices and networks. The inclusion of 4G-LTE is a boon for Indian customers as 4G networks are spreading far and wide across the country. The primary 8 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss Tessar lens snaps decent quality pictures. An exclusive app set called ‘lenses’ improves the post-processing effects of the images shot using the camera. There is an app to create GIF (moving) images and another app lets to take a group shot and later swap the faces for getting the perfect shot. Camera can capture videos in Full HD (1080p) quality. The included 1800 mAh Lithium Ion battery gives a standby time of 254 hours and a talk time of 10.2 hours. There is a huge 16 GB of internal memory in the phone which can be expanded by another 64 GB using a microSD card. Both GPS and GLONASS are included to give a more accurate picture of your exact location on the maps.
What’s not so Great?
The hard plastic casing also makes the phone a bit old fashioned and takes off the elegance generally associated with Lumia phones. The phone also feels a bit bulky with a thickness of 11.2 mm. The phone just has 1 GB of RAM which doesn’t seem to complement the processor of the phone well. The phone gets struck sometimes while viewing graphic rich content or using resource intensive apps. As the phone runs on the Windows Phone OS, there is still lot of scarcity of apps available for it.
Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos
Priced at Rs 19,500, Galaxy Grand is a slightly cheaper but fully packed alternative to the Lumia 822. A bigger 5 inch screen makes the phone to rub its shoulders with the likes of the Xperia Z and the very latest Samsung Galaxy S4. Galaxy Grand has a fast 1.2 GHz dual core processor which makes it fast like the Lumia 822. The 8 GB of internal memory of the phone can be expanded by another 32 GB through a microSD card. A big draw for the Galaxy Grand is the dual SIM (GSM + GSM) support for the phone. Dual SIM support makes it a very attractive option for the affluent younger customers. The 8 MP Primary Camera can record full HD videos which can be played on the phone’s 5 inch display which again supports full HD playback. You can prefer buying this phone over the Xperia P for its bigger screen, Android OS, and dual SIM support.
Sony Xperia L
Priced at Rs. 16,450, the Sony Xperia L is another nice alternative to the Lumia 822 that can be considered. The phone is also slightly cheaper than the Lumia 822 and offer same level of features as that of the latter. Xperia L runs on the Android OS and hence has access to more number of apps than the Lumia 822. Xperia L too has 8 megapixel camera which takes equally brilliant images as that of the Lumia 822. True to the standards of Sony, the Xperia L has a fantastic design which it both attractive as well as ergonomic. You can prefer the Xperia L over the Lumia 822 for its superior design, Android OS, and a slightly cheaper price tag.
The new Nokia Lumia 822 is a good attempt by Nokia to bring a decent midrange phone to the market. The design of the phone looks unique and makes the phone to stand along with the other good midrange phones from the likes of Samsung and HTC in the market. The 1.5 GHz fast processor and the ClearBlack AMOLED display are some of the biggest strengths of the phone. Display offers lot of real estate for content, colors, deep blacks and marvelous viewing angles. The bulky size and the limited RAM of the phone also some minor negative aspects of the phone. All in all, you can buy the phone if like the Windows Phone OS or want a phone with good camera capabilities. There are also good midrange alternatives to be considered like the Samsung Galaxy Grand Quattro and Galaxy Grand Duos. Nokia should go for a price cut to make the phone more attractive to the younger generation.
Price and Availability
The price of the latest Nokia Lumia 822 in the Indian retail market is Rs. 20,500. The phone can also be bought online from Ecommerce website like flipkart.com and amazon.in.
