Review - Lenovo P780

Lenovo has been working very hard to bring a wide range of smartphones which can compete with the likes of Samsung and Sony. And it has released a number of mid and high end smartphones in the Indian market. The most recent of them is the Lenovo P780 which has a better configuration than the Lenovo P770. The latest P780 has a number of advancements like a quad core processor, high quality IPS display, and a massive battery. Despite all these improvements, Lenovo P780 fails to impress people with the staid design.

First Impressions

There is nothing unique about the design of the Lenovo 780. The phone has a rectangular candy bar design which is seen on most of the modern smartphones in the market. Front of the phone has a complete touch interface without any physical buttons. The phone has a big display which uses the In-plane switching technology. This makes the phone to give a gorgeous viewing experience while watching videos and browsing the internet.

What’s Good?
The outer shell of the phone has a premium looking finish which makes the phone to stand out from the crowd in the segment in which it is positioned. Front of the phone is totally dedicated to the touch screen of the phone with just three capacitive touch buttons placed just below the display. Despite being totally made of plastic the phone has a premium look, thanks to the high quality material that is used to make the outer panels of the phone. While the front is given a glossy finish, rear of the phone has a brushed metallic finish. Lenovo has left the rear of the phone totally clean except for the Lenovo logo and the camera lens with flash. A beautiful metallic bezel that is surrounding the phone adds to the look of the phone. The phone has a big 5 inch display with a resolution of 720x1280 pixels and support to up to 16 million colors. Display produces good color contrast and brightness which makes it easy to read the text even in low lighting conditions. The phone is powered by a 1.2 GHz quad core processor. Quad core processor gives excellent speed to the phone and makes it to function without any lags. Lenovo P780 has Dual-SIM support which makes it a very attractive option for younger customers. All the conventional as well as modern connectivity options ranging from Bluetooth to WiFi are available in the phone for easy connectivity with other devices and networks.

The 780 works on the latest Android 4.2 which makes all the latest apps available on the Play Store compatible for it. Lenovo might also make the latest Android 4.3 available for the P780 as the latest version of Android is already available in the market. Lenovo has mounted an 8 megapixel camera on the phone’s rear which takes good quality pictures. The accompanying flash of the P780 too is of good quality and helps in snapping good quality pictures in low light conditions and even in total darkness. The phone also has a 2 megapixel front facing secondary camera for video calling and video chatting. Quality of secondary camera too is good. The Lenovo P780 has a massive 4000 mAh battery which gives excellent backup to the phone. In fact battery is a big USP to the phone and its capacity is almost comparable to the batteries seen on 7 and 8 inch tablets. The battery gives a stand by time of 35 days and a talk time of 43 hours.

What’s not so Good?
Despite the brushed metallic finish of the phone’s rear, the Lenovo 780 doesn’t has a slip proof grip to protect the phone from accidental falls. The phone just has 1 GB of RAM which sometimes seems to complement the quad core processor of the phone. Limited RAM decreases the speed of the phone while handling resource intensive apps and games with high graphic content. Internal memory of the phone tool is limited to just 4 GB which can be very insufficient for some people. Nonetheless, the memory of the phone can be expanded up to another 32 GB with an external microSD card. But users of the phone need to be prepared to shell out more for the memory of the phone. Despite being a high end phone, ultra-modern connectivity options like NFC and 4G-LTE are absent from the phone. As 4G networks are spreading across the nation, this can be a big limitation for the phone.
HTC 8X C620E

Priced at Rs. 22,999, the HTC 8X is a good alternative to the Lenovo P780. HTC 8X runs on a 1.5 GHz dual core krait processor which makes the phone to run at good speed. The phone has the latest version of the Windows Phone OS. Windows Phone OS makes the phone to stand out in the crowded market by it a distinct look and feel. Like the other phones in the Lumia series, the design of the new HTC 8X is based on the rectangular monoblock design philosophy that Nokia has started using in the Windows Phone powered phones. The phone has an 8 megapixel rear camera which snaps good quality pictures and HD quality videos. You can prefer the HTC 8X over the Lenovo P780 for its unique design, Windows Phone OS, and faster processor.

Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos
Priced at Rs 19,500 the Samsung Grand Duos is another good alternative to the Lenovo P780 you can consider. Galaxy Grand has the same 5 inch screen with high resolution which gives equal multimedia experience to that of the P780. A powerful 1.2 GHz dual core processor and 1 GB of RAM give it a good speed even while handling resource intensive apps. Galaxy Grand comes with Android 4.1 out of the box. Galaxy Grand also has Dual SIM (GSM + GSM) support making it very attractive for younger customers. Galaxy Grand’s 8 megapixel rear camera can record full HD videos with excellent clarity. You can prefer the Galaxy Grand over the Lenovo P780 if you want a good phone from a more reputed international brand like Samsung and for a slightly cheaper price.

The Lenovo P780 is a combination of hits and misses for a computer which is trying very hard to capture a major chunk of the smartphone market in India. A Quad core processor, latest Android OS, Dual-SIM support is the biggest positives of the phone. The high capacity battery which gives month of standby time to the phone is another major positive aspect to the phone. But Lenovo has missed on certain things in the phone like lower RAM and limited internal memory. You can buy the Lenovo P780 if you want a distinct looking Android smartphone which gives an excellent power backup. Otherwise, look for the likes of Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos or the yet to be released Samsung Galaxy Express.
Price and Availability
The price of the Lenovo P780 in the Indian retail market is Rs. 22,549. The phone is available at all Lenovo’s exclusive dealerships as well as the leading multi-brand mobile phone outlets like Mobile Store and Universal. The phone can also be bought online from Ecommerce website like and
